Life’s Dependable
Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., CLC, SDS
I call it things you can depend on.
Your friends call -hey let’s go for the first bike ride of the season. Great, you’re on board. You go into the garage -whoops who borrowed your bike recently and didn’t return it?!
Oh, wait there it is, in the corner.
Oh gee- the tires are flat. Wait – No problem, you happen to own a tire pump. Hey – where is that thing?
There it is, stashed away on a shelf -you found it relatively quickly. Oy -But where’s that little piece that gets it connected to the tire?
Voila, it was hidden in a little compartment underneath the pump. Just pop it in and it’s ready to be attached to the bike. Whoopy, I hear the air going. Oh no, I feel the air coming out! I’m taking all the air out, none is going in?!
Ahha- that’s it-you have to angle it a bit. Poof poof poof …. Yay, ready to ride!
Uwww -Last item -where’s my helmet. Wait who took my helmet off the hook? Ah look there. Got it. Oh no -Who readjusted it? Uch those crazy straps, torturous to reposition; My ears get pulled down my neck gets shrunk up and cuts my breath, so I can hardly utter a word.
Oh, wait yippee – there’s mine!
Okay – – -Ready to rock and roll.
Just – ‘Beam Garage door up Scotty!’
Oh no -it’s drizzling out!
Or is it stopping. Yes, it was just a little rain shower. Hooray –
And I’m off!! …..hmmmm – text coming in – – – “Change of plans, flat tires, we’re going to the beach”!
Feel at all familiar?!
Some things just happen to happen that way. Not, all but certain ones always have that kind of crazy flow. Like that bike that you ignored all winter that bites you back each spring.
Or – Kind of like making one wrong move when you’re driving far. It should be one mere blip in your trip. But it gets on a roll.
You were doing beautifully till the highway split. Somehow you went right, and the highway went left.
No problem you’ll just drive along side and get right back on. Wait that’s what you think. The highway just went up about 10 feet in the air, and you’re all the way down here.
And now Waze just added a half hour to your ETA. Didn’t anyone ever program in U turns?
Hey, now, where’d all this additional traffic come from? Did everyone make that same wrong turn?!
Okay, I’ll regroup no way to fly up there onto the highway anyway. But -What kind of neighborhood is it taking me through? This is not a neighborhood I’d wander into voluntarily. Where’s the next highway already?
Yippee- the sign’s in sight. Oh my gosh. Did someone pay everyone with a car to come to this road? It’s bumper to bumper. Looks like we can settle in for the duration.
Oh good, it was some temporary tie up. The traffic is opening up ahead.
Now, I just need to get to a rest room quickly. Wait- is that one… that I’m actually just paaasssssing positioned in the middle of the road too far over to my left to get to?!!!!
And so, the trip goes on…
There are just these certain situations that intermittently and dependably go from slight blip to extended trying patterns.
Sometimes it’s the restaurant experience.
“Sir can I take your order….”
“Yes thanks -I’ll have the squash soup”.
“So Sorry we don’t have that today”.
“No problem I’ll just have that vegetable purée thing – And for my main- “Can I get the cowboy steak?”
“Oh yes excellent choice, our most popular”.
“Excuse me sir- It seems we just ran out of the steak you wanted. How about the Delmonico?”
“Whatever you suggest. As long as I can have the chocolate soufflé for dessert.”
“Ummm. We’ve had a really busy night – can I suggest? ….. “
“The check? !!!!”
Recognize this one –
Your toddler wakes up. Crying more than usual.
Just so you can get back to sleep quickly – you put him in your bed.
Yay done!
But, tonight he’s restless.
He is squirming all over the bed. You can’t sleep for worrying.
You decide to make sure he’s safe. You get up again and push your bed to the wall. Then you hover off the rim. And wait.
Finally, he cuddles next to you. He’s dozing off. Ah, a hint of sleep is in the air.
Yup, there’s that steady breathing.
At last, you can get back to sleep- Hooray. Mmmmmm
But, Alas – as you doze off -A sensation washes over you. You are floating in an ocean. Whoever changed that last diaper of his didn’t do a very secure job closing the sides!!!!!
So, it goes – some things feel inevitable time and again. The somewhat humorous frustrating fact that every once in a while, things will just snow ball in complexity. And then there’s those things that don’t necessarily happen a lot but feel like they do. You know like nothing to do 3 Sunday’s in a row, and then suddenly, everything you want to be at, is scheduled on the same Sunday!
I just call it all the things we can depend on. And that way instead of feeling so upset when these things happen , we can feel, well at least life is dependable!
