Hi Madam, I’m Adam
Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., CLC, SDS
Why are we celebrating?
If it’s Adams birthday, what does it have to do with us?
No where do we hear of anyone else’s birthday getting the whole Jewish nation all involved?
Most of us are lucky if a handful of people actually remember our birthdays.
In fact, we are so glad there are belated birthday cards. That way the few people who forgot us can still remember us and acknowledge us. And we happily accept.
So, what’s with everyone getting so involved with Adam’s big day?
Well honestly, we all wouldn’t be here if he didn’t start things rolling!
He was born on what we now refer to as Rosh Hashana and then we all followed.
In fact, he had a unique delivery.
There was no mom waiting there to whisk him home and no live humans to guide him.
Instead, Gd went straight to the earth and created him directly from the elements there.
Adam thus teaches us to: 1. Appreciate where we came from and 2. Register how lucky we are to have personalized parents to nurture us.
Basically, -he took one for the team!!
Sure, this means, he sometimes felt like dirt! And other times a complete loner. But he did all this just to be a role model for us all. Obviously, to help us gain the realization that we need to be humble, because of what we are really made of. Also, to be thankful, because we do not grow up alone.
So now doesn’t it make sense for all of us to celebrate his birthday!! You bet! What a great guy he was!
As we enter this holiday called Rosh Hashana/ the start of the year. Let’s not forget the messages that Adam sacrificed to gift us.
Let’s remember our humble origin and not get too big in our minds. Let’s remember that all our friends came from the same place – ground level. We are not inherently better or worse than one another, just packaged differently at times.
We have the opportunity to grow as all creatures do, yet, Gd blessed us with the ability to accrue wisdom and to use it to make choices.
So, let’s make good choices. Let’s be appreciative of what we have. Let’s look at what we can do with what we have.
And let’s remember all things start with another Atom. It’s up to us to develop ours! To work to rise far above our simple origins and at the same time to never forget them.
Happy birthday, and thank you Adam, and happy opportunity for a New beginning for us all!
