Bored is Beautiful
Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., LMFT, CLC, SDS
When I was a kid one of my biggest fears was being bored.
I was so nervous that if maybe I had 10 seconds unaccounted for that I might not know what to do with myself- I might get BORED.
Throughout life, I retained this niggling fear in some form. I’d even do things like sticking a book in my purse just in case the line in the supermarket was long and I had no one familiar to talk to. I know corn has ears and potatoes have eyes, but something has to have a mouth to keep you from being bored.
But, all that was yesterday, so to speak. What I’m noticing these days when I’m completely overwhelmed, overworked, and overwrought is that sometimes -bored is beautiful!
Sometimes so many life obligations are pulling at us simultaneously, that we realize- hey wouldn’t it be great to have some down time- boredom moments.
Boredom moments mean something like moments to think -what do I want to do. Rather than, having every second plagued with an obligation of something you must do, or worse, should be doing!
With life’s complexities we are pulled in many directions.
I guess I’m pining for a little simplicity.
Just time to be staring out into outer space and staying there for a bit- guiltlessly!
That would be the new luxury.
It used to be about being able to eat a triple scoop ice cream banana split or a whole bunch of junk food guiltlessly, or actually doing some other extreme activity, guiltlessly. But with overload comes this desire for time to just be?!
If that sounds enticing to you.
Oy!
I’d venture to guess your life’s just a little bit too stressful these days. And really, who needs that?!!
But often it’s outside circumstances or events beyond our control causing it.
So, what’s a human to do?
Try to find those boredom moments and embrace them. Maybe they are there somewhere, and we are just missing them?!
If not- create them. Yes- I said create them. Literally, find someone or something to help cover for you.
Create some clear head moments. And then don’t fill them up!
Just sit and stare at the world. Let your mind and body rest. And for that limited space in time you may appreciate that bored can be beautiful….
And
Rejuvenating
Cleansing
Inspiring
And helpful in getting you ready for the next leg of your journey.
